Silver Sunday, celebrating the contribution that older people make
This year Silver Sunday falls on 7th October and will celebrate the contribution that older people make in the community with a two week long programme of activities and events from 2 to 13 October.
Older residents can meet new people, try out new activities, have fun, stay active and involved in their communities and invite someone to accompany them if they wish, such as a relative or carer.
Organisations and community groups across the borough are hosting an exciting range of special activities and events such as:
dancing with the English National Ballet, and discovering what goes on behind the scenes
arts and crafts workshops at the Mosaic Rooms, Saatchi Gallery, Brompton Hospital and the Design Museum, and a drawing workshop at Holland Park School
two exciting workshops; 'Gadget Drop-in' and 'Brain Balance and Biology', both delivered by the Science Museum and Open Age
learning about plants at the Chelsea Physic Garden
a guided tour of Brompton Cemetery (see the results of the recently completed restoration project funded by the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery funds)
handling pieces from the Victoria and Albert Museum's silver collection
finding out about the pioneering work being done at the Royal Marsden Hospital
getting pampered at a Health and Well-being Day at Al-Manaar, the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre - try out a pilates or acupuncture session, or treat yourself to a manicure or a massage
dialling in to the weekly Open Age Phone Club from the comfort of your own home
exploring 18 Stafford Terrace - a unique example of a late Victorian townhouse
singing at Leighton House - the former home and studio of the leading Victorian artist, Lord Leighton
watching the Twin Swing Sisters and a special performance by Opera Holland Park at Our Lady of Victories Parish Centre over afternoon tea
Cllr Gerard Hargreaves, Lead Member for Communities and Culture, said: “The Silver Sunday programme is a great way to showcase the many activities available throughout the year to help older residents stay active and involved. I would also like to thank all of the organisations who are hosting a wonderful range of special events during Silver Sunday week.”
